Activity Overview
Maule Valley is comparable to Central valley´s south region and boasts the largest vineyard plantations all over Chile. This valley has a rich viticultural tradition that dates back to the Spanish colonial times. Currently, there are about 30.000 hectares of vineyards planted in this region of Chile. During the mid 80ths, there was an increase in exports in the country as well as wine productions. This had an impact on how wines are elaborated.
This development led to the introduction of new irrigation systems, modern technological innovations, and an increase in European vineyards. You'll discover the following grapes in Maule Valley: White vines: Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Muscat, Riesling, Torontel. Red vines: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Carménère, Malbec, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Semillón, Syrah. This tour starts with a visit to the Miguel Torres cellar. Miguel Torres is a visionary Spanish man in the wine business. In 1980 he discovered that Chile had three key elements required to produce a great wine: grapes, weather, and soil.
Miguel Torre's decision to select Chile for its amazing climatic conditions were not enough, he was the first person to bring new technologies for wine production to Chile. These technologies included the fermentation in a stainless steel tank and maturation in French oak barrels. Innovation line came up with a project to reclaim "Pais grape", introduced in the country around 500 years ago. This grape variety is known in Spain as " Listan" and was named "Mission" in the New World Colonies. Resulting from this was a unique sparkling wine, purely Chilean, and a reward for Chile and its people, "Santa Digna Estelado".
The winery visit will be followed by lunch where wine and food are matched, as you enjoy the harmony between food and wine. We'll then proceed with the tour towards J. Bouchon winery, set in Maule Valley, where the qualities of their cellar is a reflection of their philosophy, they operate in simple adobe constructions established at the start of the 20th-Century. The wines are prepared in a natural setting, preserving traditions and the less possible energetic utilization. You'll visit the vineyards as well as the cellar, with a Wine tasting! We'll depart at 8:00 am.
