Activity Overview
Vines in the Marais?! Discover the green side of Paris' most popular fashion district and its secret vineyard in Paris.

This hidden vineyard of the charming Joseph Mignaret garden in the heart of the Marais district is a surprising discovery. The 'Marais', which means swamp, drained in the 12th century, primarily produced market vegetables, but there were vines here too. An extensive vineyard attached to the Hotel Royal Saint Pol produced wines in the Middle Ages, so the history of the vine here is as old as the quarter's history.

Join us for this exceptional visit and explore another aspect of the role the vine still plays in the urban landscape. An exclusive wine tasting reflecting the flavors of the varietals planted here with a savory aperitif (delicious French nibbles) will complete this unique outing in Paris.

Frequently Asked Questions
The tastings include a minimum of two wines and generally three. The wines selected vary from one tour to another as they always correspond to the vines planted in the vineyard we have visited. Though these are wines made in other regions of France, and NOT the wines produced in the vineyards themselves (access to these wines, with the exception of Montmartre, is very limited and production too small to allow for public consumption), they still connect us to the grape varieties we have seen and also allow us to connect to the spirit of wine.
All of the wine bars and wine shops we visit feature organic, biodynamic and ‘natural’ wines as we are committed to living wines with real taste that don't give headaches and also preserve soils, reducing CO2 emissions and allowing water-tables to stay clean. In other words, wines without pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, chemical yeasts, chemical additions or fertilizers - wines that are made from grapes and nothing else.
We have made an effort to find wine shops and wine bars that are close to the vineyards and so walking is limited, though may involve distances of a kilometre or more, all told. We don’t spend much time sitting down, so make sure you’re able to walk and stand for two to three hours.
Of course, but there is no reduction offered for not participating in the wine tastings.
This is a decision parents must make, keeping in mind that our tours are explicitly designed for adults and feature adult experiences (wine tasting), and detailed discussion. There are no discounts for children. The legal age for buying alcohol in France is eighteen, and for consumption, sixteen.
Our tours run rain or shine and so we suggest you prepare accordingly. Much of each tour will be outdoors and in the streets, though the wine tastings are of course in the shelter of a wine shop or wine bar. No cancellations due to weather are accepted.

We had a lovely casual introduction to the lesser known past vineyards in le Marais district of Paris with Geoffrey last week. This tour culminated in a sweet sharing of breads and cheeses alongside a selection of biodiversified wines... very enjoyable company, a glorious evening.

Enjoy a Food Tour in one of the most authentic and intense areas of Paris far from the main tourist attractions. Start the tour discovering the legendary Place de la Bastille which ... moreis located in the 12th arrondissement, on the Rive Droite (right bank) of Paris, few minutes from the Seine river and the Marais district. You will enjoy there typical Parisian breakfast before heading to the Aligre Market through the innumerable ( and almost secret) passages that give this district its unique character and that have made it a young, trendy and creative place.

The Aligre market is one of the best known of Parisian foodies. He operate every morning (except on Mondays) and its stallholders welcome you right on the streets of the Aligre square.

Actually the Aligre Market offers you two markets and two charming atmospheres. Under the covered market called Beauvau, around the old fountain , you will find French and Italian delicatessen, fresh fishes, poultry, dairy, cut flowers...
On the outdoor part, there is a curious mix between shouting « merchants des 4 saisons » (fruits sellers) and antique dealers, half of a food market, half of a flea market.

Around this market, the diversity of shops related to the art of good cooking impresses gourmets who are the most passionate about its diversity and richness.

You even will enjoy wine with cheese or delicatessen on an old wine barrel ! Or mingle with the locals and sip a hot chocolate or hot wine during the winter or an aperitif in summer.

You will feel like one of the locals as you chat to shopkeepers and taste local cheeses, cured meats and chocolate.

On this food tour you will also be able to learn from the history of this very special market but also from our entire country with the place of the Bastille, symbol of the French revolution.
