Badia A Passignano, Tuscany, Italy
Duration:
1 Day
Feeling out of the world takes only a moment, yet you are a 45 minute drive from bustling Florence. A sweet an quiet area of Chianti is the backdrop to a beautiful Benedictine Abbey ... moredating back to the year 395, the Badia a Passignano, home of San Giovanni Gualberto (The Hero of Forgiveness), founder of the Vallombrosian order of Monks who still reside at the abbey and who have been promoting scientific research (Galileo Galilei was a teacher here in 1587) and the conservation of the local countryside, especially through vine growing on the land surrounding the abbey.

The Badia a Passignano is the result of huge architectural and decorative changes dating back to the Renaissance, reflecting the strong presence of Florence also in rural areas. Everything here suggests typically Florentine Renaissance art, strongly supported and personally realized by the Medici, first by Lorenzo the Magnificent in the cloister, the wooden choir, in the extension of the monastery to promote the novitiate and in the summons of famous artists to decorate the complex, then by Cosimo I de Medici in the late Renaissance paintings that were all made under his direction. At the end of 800, the monastery is transformed into a neo-gothic castle and private residence. The contrast of two different architectural styles is virtually unique in Chianti, and of strong historical interest.

During the visit to the abbey you will admire the Last Supper, frescoed by Ghirlandaio (1476-77). An experienced guide will lead you to discover artistic treasures and the well kept Italian garden, engulfed in an overwhelming sacred and spiritual atmosphere.

Welcome to the Tuscan region of Chianti: a stunning landscape of rolling hills planted with a sea of vineyards and olive groves, tiny villages, charming parish churches, stone farmhouses and noble castles. You can’t miss the opportunity to taste one of the most famous wines in the world. The story behind Chianti must be told by those who were born with a passion for wine, who have been making wine for years, for whom every vintage is a new beginning, having their roots in the past but looking towards the future.

Highlights:
A unique trip through Tuscany’s undiscovered treasured art, among castles, vineyards and wine cellars, and an Abbey, La Badia a Passignano, surrounded by green cypress trees that seem to guard such extraordinary beauty.
