We commence our tour from Chania city center around 10 am, head towards an outstanding, historical hill to appreciate the beautiful view of the town. The wine tour continues to a fantastic monastery located in the foothills of an old mountain, built in the 17th century by two mocks from the traditional Cretan family. The building was designed by the well-known Veronese architect Sebastiano Serlio. In 1821 it was burned down by the Turks but renovated in 1892.
The monastery plays a massive part in the history of wine-making and olive oil production. The monks produce local Cretan and international wine varieties including; “Romeiko,” “Muscat of Alexandria,” “Trebianno,” “Cabernet” and more. One of the monks will lead us through the history of the monastery while the other will make a presentation on the Cretan culture and the history of wine-making. You will also have an opportunity to eat a traditional Cretan rusk made with cheese and fresh tomato accompanied with extra virgin oil and the best Cretan wine. After that will visit the two museums with magnificent treasures inside the monastery.
We then leave the monastery, visit a beautiful nature park situated a few kilometers from the city center. Admire the nature as we walk through the blooming vegetation and hear the birds chirp. The nature walk will take place if the weather is favorable. Alternatively, will visit the ancient Aptera city and the Venetian fortress.

Dimitri was our wonderful driver and guide. He was very knowledgable about the sights we were seeing and about the history of Crete. We went to a beautiful monastery, saw their wine making equipment, tasted their wines, saw ancient ruins and vast panoramic vistas. We had a lovey time, and do hope to return!
Overall Experience
Dimitrois greeted us as soon as we got off the cruise ship and was very friendly. It was a 7 hour tour and from start to finish we felt like we were VIP's and family. He told us so much about the things we were seeing and when just driving to our next destination, he would talk to you about the country and interesting things you might want to know. He welcomed questions and we learned so much. We ... more travel alot and have experienced tour g uides that are NOT good and never talk except when they absolutely have to and you never learn anything about the country or place you are visiting. We visited the most beautiful monastery where they make their own organic wine and extra virgin olive oil. We visited on a Sunday so we were very fortunate to actually witness the service taking place. We received a wine tour and how they make their olive oil. The grounds were so beautiful and for miles all you can see are their own olive trees. Afterwards we were taken to a actual room that dates back to 5th century where we were able to sit down and try 4 different wines and their different varieties of extra virgin olive oil along with their homemade bread. I never tasted olive oil so incredible in my whole life. I could have eaten a whole loaf of bread with that olive oil. They also have a store there, so you can purchase it and it is VERY reasonable around 4.00 for a bottle that would cost over 25 back home in Alabama. He then took us to a famous cemetery with a lot of history, to the center of town and visited the lighthouse and even let us stop at a local restaurant for a authentic gyro which we wanted to try since we were in Greece. We went on the most beautiful drive to the top of the mountain to another famous winery and they also make extra virgin olive oil that they sell all over the world. They sell out every year since it is in such tremendous demand! We were given 4 wine samples to try along with snacks that were freshly made for us. We were also able to have the different varieties of extra virgin olive oil they make. He took us to so many places along the way that he thought we would like to see also. We take 3 cruises a year and average over 15 excursions on them all. We had experienced a lot and this is a MUST DO AND SEE!! I have never been so pleased and enjoyed such an amazing day and it was all due to our tour guide Dimitrois. We arrived back to the ship exactly when we were supposed to. When and if we visit this port again, I will definitely take this tour again and look so forward to doing so. Dimitrois is standing in the picture pointing out a special variety of olive tree. I never knew there were different kinds. I feel I made a friend for life and am a better person for experiencing the kindness shown to me and my husband on this amazing tour!!
