San Gimignano is authentic museum town with its attractive medieval towers. In the 1300s there were 72 towers, but currently, only 14 are left, giving the city it's fanciful exceptional ... moreskyline.
It's strategic positioning on the Via Francigena, San Gimignano during the middle ages become a significant trading town for wine, saffron oil, textiles, leather and wool. San Gimignano produced 90 percent of the wine from homonymous wines and the remaining percentage from other certified vines. Vernaccia produces approximately six million bottles annually. The wine is then aged and changes color from a straw yellow tint to a golden hue with a subtle sour taste and a light bitter aftertaste.
With an alcoholic strength of 11%, Vernaccia alcoholic strength can increase to 11.5%, if aged for one-year providing it with the recommended Reserve quality.
The tour begins at 9 am. We leave the hotel and make our way to Monteriggioni. Monteriggioni is a small ancient town surrounded by defensive towers and walls. We then head to San Gimignano village, which is well known for its strong towers symbolizing their past wealth. It was among the first towns constructed along the Via Francigena, the French Pilgrimage Road that connects Rome to northern Europe. You can stroll through the feudal streets, shop at the various artisan shops for alabaster, local ceramic produce and other collectable items. And off the main piazza, visit the large church.
